Understanding your Pool's Water Balance

When it comes to swimming pools, there’s a lot that goes into keeping your pool in peak condition year-round. One important aspect of pool maintenance is water balance; this involves balancing the pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness levels of your pool’s water. If these levels are off, your pool may be prone to green algae growth or equipment damage. Read on to learn how to balance the water in your pool and why it is so important for Orlando residents.

Why it Matters

Maintaining proper water balance is essential for keeping your pool clean and sanitary. If the pH level of the pool is too low (acidic), chlorine will evaporate quickly, leaving your pool susceptible to bacteria and algae growth. On the other hand, if the pH level is too high (basic) then chlorine won’t be able to fight bacteria as effectively as it should. In addition, if alkalinity levels are too low then you could end up with corrosion on your equipment due to acidity; if alkalinity levels are too high then scale buildup could occur on your tiles or fixtures - both of which can lead to costly repairs down the line.

How To Balance Your Pool Water

If you suspect that your pool's water needs balancing, here's how you can do it yourself: First, make sure that all circulation systems are turned off while you're doing this task; otherwise you may end up with an uneven distribution of chemicals throughout the pool. Next, test both pH and alkalinity levels using a testing kit or strips; if either one is out of range then add sodium bicarbonate or soda ash accordingly until both levels come back into range (pH should be 7.4-7.6). Finally, once pH and alkalinity have been adjusted then check calcium hardness levels; if they're below 150ppm then add calcium chloride until they reach 150-400ppm (ideally 250-350ppm). Note: It's important not to exceed 400ppm as this could cause scaling buildup on fixtures over time.
